Warning Signs of Vision and Visual Processing Issues

Players who frequently exhibit or complain of the following symptoms in sports, the classroom, at home or at work may have a vision and/or visual processing issue and may benefit from screening by a qualified optometrist or ophthalmologist.
  1. When shooting player usually places ball over the goal (may, for example, be an issue with depth perception or near far vision),
  2. Sometimes passes to an opponent in games (may, for example, be a color deficiency issue or an issue processing gathered visual information),
  3. Ball misses head when they trying to head the ball (may, for example, be a dynamic acuity tracking issue, an issue with depth perception, a color vision deficiency, an issue with their dominant aiming eye), 
  4. Misses the ball when kicking (may, for example, be a dynamic acuity tracking issue, an issue with depth perception, a color vision deficiency, an issue with their dominant aiming eye),
  5. Thinks ball is in bounds when it is out or vice versa (may, for example, be an issue with depth perception, a color vision deficiency, an issue with their dominant aiming eye, a dynamic acuity tracking issue),
  6. Avoids sports activities that require viewing objects that are moving or which are at a distance,
  7. Exhibits poor hand-eye coordination (poor foot-eye coordination in soccer),
  8. Squinting, tilting head, turning head and/or covering one eye so they can use the other eye to see, read, watch TV, use a computer, read on a blackboard or whiteboard in school
  9. Short attention span when doing skills that require vision or visual processing skills,
  10. Dislikes or avoids reading, homework, using computers, playing video games or other activities that require vision or visual processing skills,
  11. Frequently rubs eyes, blinks excessively, rinses their eyes with water, uses eye drops, 
  12. Loses their place when reading and/or users their finger to guide their eyes when reading,
  13. Places their eyes close to reading materials, the TV, computer screens, a cell phone and other devices with screens,
  14. Reads slowly, has difficulty remembering what is read and/or exhibits poor reading comprehension,
  15. When drawing has difficulty remembering and reproducing shapes and/or draws objects out of perspective, like drawing a chimney at a right angle to a roof's incline,
  16. Receives lower grades in subject that require vision and visual processing skills,
  17. Omits, reverses the order of, repeats and/or confuses similar words and/or letters,
  18. Sensitive to bright lights, sunlight and/or bright screens found on TV's, computers, tablets and cell phones,
  19. Complains of headaches, that their eyes are too tired, blurred vision, double vision and/or that their eyes are too dry,
  20. Eyes are crossed either on occasion or all the time and/or the eyes move independent of each other, and/or
  21. Exhibits immaturity when attempting vision and visual processing tasks.
