Visual Working Memory in Sports, School, Other Activities and Work

Individuals with perfect vision and perfect visual processing have the information they need to make instant high quality decisions if they:
  • Can instantly remember what they have seen,
  • Can correctly identify what they remember seeing,
  • Can understand what they have identified,
  • Are able to judge the importance of what they understand, and
  • Can relate it to their accumulated knowledge of the game.

As Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes short stories and novels, so aptly observed, most individuals are so wrapped up doing that they often do not observe and remember what they have seen.

The Visual Detective in Sports

Coaches, their players and referees can all benefit from learning to capture visual images of what they see in both:
  • "Short Term Visual Memory". Individuals can learn to capture visual images as they play and to use them to make instant highly reliable decisions in games.
  • "Long Term Visual Memory". Individuals can learn to store visual images captured in games for future reference (aka learning from experience) as well as visual, video, graphic and text information for future reference. In a study published in 2012 individuals studied 3,000 visuals and later were later shown pairs of visuals, only one of which was among the 3,000 visuals they studied. The study subjects were able to accurately remembered 96% of the visuals they had studied. Bibliography: Scientific American .com: 2012, May 29:

As important as remembering what is seem in sports, remembering is also essential for learning in school, other activities and most occupations.

Individuals improve their visual memory by using it in games played at home, in online tutorials and in games played in practice. See links to suggested activities in the right column.
