Square Peripheral Awareness Practice Game

This game requires:
  •  A square grid that is the distance across that most players can pass the ball,
  • 4 stacks of 1 yellow, 1 green, 1 red, 1 blue saucer cones or disks (construction paper squares also work), and
  • 8 or more players.

To play this game:
  • 1 pair of players (shown in red in animation below) and another pair (shown in blue in the animation below) stand opposite each other and focus on each other,
  • each of these players has a stack of 4 different colored cones behind their back,
  • to start the game each player holds one color cone in front of their chest,
  • in the game the players scramble the cones behind their back and every time a new player wins possession of the ball they replace the cone in front of their chest with a different color cone,
  • Player must focus on the color cone in front of their partner's chest.

To create movement and visual chaos like a real game of soccer all remaining players wear scrimmage vest and play Keep Away with each other. Rotate players for red and blue players so all players practice using their peripheral vision.

The red and blue players only focus on the cone their partner is holding, never moves their head and calls out all of the time on any movement they detect in the game.
  • what color scrimmage vest has the ball,
  • how many players in each color to their right side,
  • how many players in each color to their left side,
  • what color just passed the ball,
  • what color just received the ball.
